How it works: What does coenzyme Q10 do in cells?
- CoQ10 is fat-soluble and is absorbed better with a meal that contains fat; the body also makes its own.
- After absorption it travels in the blood on lipoproteins.
- In the inner mitochondrial membrane it carries electrons in the electron transport chain.
- This process drives ATP production. Its reduced form (ubiquinol) is also a fat-soluble antioxidant.

How much Coenzyme Q10 do products usually contain per day?
As of 2026-11-01, 2,108 products list a comparable daily dose (2,149 dose records; one product can have several). The median is 100 mg per day, and 90% of records fall between 5.15 and 260 mg. Figures come from labels and are not lab-tested. [source]
What does coenzyme Q10 do in cells?
It passes electrons along in mitochondria, a step in how cells make energy (ATP); the body also makes it. Statin drugs reduce the body's own CoQ10 production; studies disagree on whether supplements bring clinical benefit. [source]
What are the side effects of Coenzyme Q10?
No serious side effects of CoQ10 have been reported. Mild effects such as insomnia or digestive upset may occur. (Source: NCCIH) [source]
